چکیده

Generating terrain models from contour input is still an important process. Most methods have been unsatisfactory, as they either do not preserve the form of minor ridges and valleys, or else they are poor at modeling slopes. A method is described here, based on curve extraction and generalization techniques, that is guaranteed to preserve the topological relationships between curve segments. Based on this approach, which uses the properties of the Voronoi diagram and Delaunay triangulation, it is possible to make reasonable estimates of slopes for terrain models, and to extract meaningful intermediate points for triangulated irregular networks (TINs).

Terrain Modelling Based on Contours and Slopes

Good quality terrain models are becoming more and more important, as applications such as runoff modelling are being developed that demand better surface orientation information than is available from traditional interpolation techniques. A consequence is that poor-quality elevation grids must be massaged before they provide useable runoff models. This paper describes improved methods for extra...

Comparison of Two Methods for Deriving Skeleton Lines of Terrain

Skeleton lines of terrain, i.e. ridge and valley lines are essential features on topographic maps. A skeleton line is the one with minimum slope among the slope lines. Slope lines are the lines of the steepest slope. Skeleton lines are used for a wide range of aims, e.g. emphasizing land forms, generation of high fidelity digital terrain models, terrain generalization, determining characteristi...

The Crust and Skeleton – Applications in GIS

This paper shows that the simple point Voronoi diagram, together with the extraction of crust and skeleton information, can be of considerable value in a GIS environment, and that these form fundamental tools for the evaluation of spatial relationships. The “labelled skeleton” and the Voronoi skeleton are described, and are shown to be useful in the extraction of features from digitized or scan...
